A once powerful general and the desired successor to the emperor of Rome, Maximus is betrayed by the son of the late emperor and sentenced to death. he escapes, but is unable to save his family from his would-be fate. Caught and sold into slavery, Maximus is trained to become a gladiator, who fight without fear and with only one goal: to avenge the murder of his family. As he quickly ascends to one of the most feared warriors in the battle arena, MAximus is called to Rome where he will finally get the chance to lay eyes on the corupt and cowardly Emperor Commondus and perhaps exorcise his demons once and for all.

Trivia
 Oliver Reed, who plays Proximo, died with three weeks remaining in principal photography. Rather than replace him, director Ridley Scott had the remainder of the script rewritten to include less of Reed, and a stand-in with 3D CGI mask was used for his remaining scenes.!!!!???
