British POWs hekd in a Burmese prison camp are forced to build a strategic rail bridge in this gipping World War II drama. After their capture, British soldiers are ordered by their ruthless Japanese camp commander Colonel Saito To construct a bridge that will greatly aid the enemy. Sir Alec Guinness turns in an Oscar-winning performance as Colonel Nicholson, the British commanding officer who first stand up to Saito but finally agrees to build the bridge as a monument to the fortitude of his men. As the company reluctantly resume construction under Nicholson's direction, the Allies hatch a plan to destroy it. The Bridge on the River Kwai is a brilliant microcosm of the pure insanity of war.
